Ok so I have to ask because it's really bothering me...

What path possibly outside of D&D includes any rank called "wizard level"?

I've read lots of stuff, I've studied lots of stuff and the olnly place that I find anything that is "wizard level" or any lycanthrop spell is in D&D. And the lycanthrop spell can be undone or cast more than once if your charisma is 55 or better, your casting is level 40 or higher, and you have to roll a 40 or better on your two d20 for concentration.

Even Zell Ravenheart doesn't call wizard a level but a way of life. A wizard is a collector of knowledge and in time a purveyor of wisdom.

Lycanthropy is the result of the animal coming to the fore. it is treated as a psychological illness, and in the lore a lycanthrop was also called a werewolf. One who is lost in the shapeashifting process can become lycanthrop but not in the Hollywood fashion. They take on the displaced animals characteristics, growling, snarling, foaming at the mouth, refusal or becoming incapable of verbal communication. There is also the look of "other" in thier eyes. Their physical body stays the same but their spirit changes. Like the lifeless lost they are difficult to care for. Especially if you know what happened to them.

Wizard classification is used by the old ones who set spells above a certain level. I was attempting to clarify in English a complicated concept. Wizards are a way of life and the old ones classify them as different levels.

A wizard as a classification is like calling all Police Officers "Police". Since I have been working with the old ones since the 70's my view of classification of the various orders/levels/abilities is skewed to their view.

Lycanthropy is both a disease and parts of shamanistic spells. In many cases it is used as an excuse for doing something not considered polite. Warewolf is one form of the situation. With the shamanistic spells you have Ware; rat, dog, cat, bat, and as far as I have heard any animal that can be skinned and worn for the shape change. What is D&D?

I've studied a lot of the old texts too. And even Hermes Trismegistus doesn't talk about wizard levels, neither does Abramellin, or Cornelius Agrippa. There is nothing in the old hermetic texts and there is no mention of a wizard level in any Summarian, Archadian, Etruscian, or Egyptian text either.

I know what the "legends' say about lycanthropy. And ... I know the reality. I've worked the psych wards. I've seen the results of the untrained trying to play with things they don't understand. I have felt the animal come to the fore. and no I wasn't wearing a wolf pelt. Anytime a five foot nothing little woman can back down a 200lb attacking rottwiler you can bet she knows about the animal coming to the fore.

So I suppose the next question in trying to understand just where it is that you are coming from is...
Just who are these "old ones"? You might be surprized at what this little blended individual will understand.

My main Three currently, last 20,000 years go by the christian names of Jophiel, Michael, Zadkiel or so they told me. As my main focus is on the Astral plane of Magic I am not sure which area you are focusing on.

I agree about the animal coming to the fore but perhaps each writer has their own definition of levels? I am not saying mine are the correct ones only the ones I have knowledge of.

Sweetie, I'm dealing with magical practice and the magical life on the same plane that most here are on... The physical.
Don't get me wrong, that doesn't mean that I don't ever travel into the ether. Quite the contrary, but I don't generaly take my magical training from there. I choose to live on the physical and have a material experience, so it is only propper for me to go at it with a whole heart. That means that I have to do lots of homework and gather information from sources that I can then point others to, so that they may do the work to make the information personal to them.
