Good luck. Two of my friends have died in the last year from sudden (and in their case, unexpected) bowel puncture, so you've been extremely lucky so far.

At least it sounds like that bit's over for you.

In addition to whatever the doctors are doing to counter the infection, make sure you eat LOTS of garlic (raw if you can handle it). During WW1 when they couldn't make antiseptics fast enough, garlic oil was used as a substitute. I am in no way suggesting you apply oil (as they did in the war) on a serious injury such as this (despite the fact it has worked for me in the past) but get as much of the stuff into you as you can handle as it appears to make the blood extremely inhospitable to bugs.
