Lessons From Unlikely Sources

As one undertakes the living of a magical lifestyle there are many new lessons to be learned. Finding the right information to incorporate not only the right look but the correct mindset as well can be exhaustive. But it doesn't always have to be so. Life is also a lot about enjoyment. There are many ways to divine knowledge from just about any experience that you have. Having the ability to comprehend what you are seeing is a very important talent to develop.

One of the nice things about living life with this knowledge to observe and learn from everything is that wisdom can be found in unusual places. Many entertainers in both books and the movies have littered fanciful and sometimes quite dangerous ideas about Witchcraft, magic and the Spiritual realm. But to balance that somewhat is the discovery of a fiction that relates the truth of a thing better than mere mundane fact.

If you want to be a Witch you could do a lot worse than learning from the Lancre Witches. As a way to see a practical approach to daily living as a Witch, you can learn the balance between when magic should and shouldn't be used. You will be taken to the Edge and learn of the responsibility making decisions will bring. You might even learn a bit of 'Headology' from Granny Weatherwax.

Chronicled by Sir Terry Pratchett, a native born product of British soil, The tales of the Lancre Witches begins with an introduction to Granny Weatherwax in 'Equal Rites' and investigates not only the differences between Witchcraft and Wizardry but takes a blunt stand on gender inequality.

Continuing with 'Wyrd Sisters', the rest of the 'Coven' is introduced. Nanny Ogg exemplifies the more practical, earthy kind of magic that really gets out there and lives a life. While played with a Shakespearean twist, the role of magic in Ruling and Control is dissected. Finding your 'true' self and path in life as opposed to what you thought you were supposed to be is explored.

The realm of Imagination experienced on the Discworld is portrayed as a 'World and Mirror of Worlds'. Mirror magic and the power of stories are the central themes as one contemplates what a 'happy ending' may really be. The journey takes off with 'Witches Abroad'.

There are more lessons to be learned as you study the examples set forth. But I will hazard a guess you have become a believer by now so I will leave you to the rest.

One other Witch to study with is young Tiffany Aching. Learning includes how to open your eyes and then open them again. Far from any mountain rock, Tiffany has been born a natural witch out on the chalk plains. Where does your power come from? Exploring the way realities mirror and overlap is observed as she learns the secret of 'wave under stone'. [The Wee Free Men, A Hatful of Sky, Wintersmith]

While these books can be enjoyed merely for the entertainment value, I would still suggest you give some thought to the words of the "Witches'. You can learn a lot about how to live the life and give you food for thought on many a future meditation session.

On a side note: I know at first glance that some may not think this is appropriate study material for learning the Craft. Read the books first and then see if you don't agree with me that it is most appropriate and highly recommended. Comments along the way are most welcome!

My favorite authors are Charles de Lint, Marion Zimmer Bradley, Robert Heinlein, and Frank Herbert. I learned a lot from Dune and Stranger in a Strange Land.

There are some great works of fiction put out by Pagan authors as well. Starhawk has a couple of really good books "Fifth Sacred Thing" and "Walking to Mercury". Let's also not forget "High Magics Aide" by Gardner, and "Dairy of a Drug Fiend" By Crowley.

We can learn a lot by reading... But we must vet information. There are some authors who just don't really do the work, they publish books with wrong information and try to pass it off as factual. I always recomend investing in a few good refference books. Mythology encyclopedias, and things found either in the poetry sections or the mythology section of your favorite book store are almost always worth the cost. The philosophy section will also have great treasures, if you will but look.

Even this box sitting in front of you right now can have some great resources. Just check everything.

Good Day April,

Yes, I too learned some very valuable insights from the Bene Gesserit, especially the Litany Against Fear. Herbert\'s explanation of how to achieve meditative trance was the first one than made sense to me.

While it is true that a lot of popular writers make it up as they go along, it is awesome when some of them, due to their minds staying on that creative/psychic edge, pick up and pass along snippets of a greater reality they have encountered.

Good morning Douglas!

Yep Herbert and "Dune" helped me to understand a lot of things that were going on. Dreams that came true, knowing when people were lying, and he finished up Heinleins work on perspectives. Somehow over the course I learned how to take the longer view and be able to watch the "wheels within wheels".

Now I find those same kinds of wisdom all over. That is the whole point behind the "Windbringer" blog. Pieces of wisdom that I have tried to grasp, sometimes for years, untill I hear it on the radio, or see it in a video. Sometimes I catch them in movies, or television shows, and each time it's presented in a different way.

Normaly I'm not a big fan of television. Music and Books are my normal friends, but lately that idiot box has been putting out some good stuff too. If you will take the time to look and then read further after the show is over.
