As the neo-pagan movement grows in this modern age, there is one style of Witchcraft that goes often overlooked and under appreciated. Without much in the way of support or ceremonial trappings, the usually solitary Green Witch goes about their way gracefully caring for the life of the planet and its children.
Green Witchcraft exhibits itself in ways that are closer to nature and its life-giving forces than the ceremonial paths of larger groups that hold with hierarchies and dogmatic rituals. This is a form of knowing and learning of the basic principles of herbcraft for healing and prevention of diseases. It is a path of listening to the problems and difficulties of the people around them and finding natural solutions.
The Green Witch generally tends to take the more practical approach and will be more inclined to make do with working their magic with the materials at hand rather than seek expensive and elaborate tools to work with. A good kitchen knife with a serviceable steel blade will serve them as well for an athame as a rune carved ceremonial dagger. A wooden cup will serve them as well for a chalice as any finely engraved silver for the Green Witch will know that the symbology is more important that the artifact.
There is not so much of the trappings of religion with the Craftwork of the Green Witch. Their power is in knowing how to use the fruits of the earth to heal those things of the earth that come to their attention. While the Green Witch may be aware of the gods and the balancing forces of nature they represent, the practitioner of Green Witchcraft knows that the power is already imbued in the elements and needs only be realized to put to good effect.
There is no specific belief system inherent in Green Witchery. Whatever faith system, gods or elemental entities the Green Witch believes helps in their healing arts are welcome and worthy of acknowledgement. Physical distress does not keep appointed hours of the day so they are more likely to be in touch with the whole of the day for offering succor to an injured or ailing life form.
With the emphasis on caring for the life around them over spells of personal gain, the Green Witch will be more likely to develop an understanding of the Edge Magic. These are the points where life hangs on the edge of death and they must be willing to accept the responsibility of living with the choices they make in treatments.
Green Witchcraft is a nondenominational path of living and working within the natural world for the betterment of life in general. It is a tradition that passes back into the ancient times of the Wise Woman of the Woods who can be approached for her knowledge of medicines. She is the Seer who can advise the uninitiated on the best ways to live a more bountiful life. She is the heart and soul of what Earth Magic and the natural flow of living energy is all about.
As well as writing and researching on the paranormal and occult phenomena that intersect our reality, Douglas Mefford can also be found helping spread literature to the world at Bell, Book & Candle Publications or hanging out at his bungalow in Greenwoods Village.
